The UK negative yote on this Part was due to the fact that the Eurupean methods foralkalisgive values forNaOequivalent f cement higher byapprximately 0.025%alsolute than thse tained using ither the curren BS or the ASTM methods which have heen used in the UK for the purpuse ofcalculating the ‘reactive’ alkali content of concrete.
In consequenee the BS 4550 : Par 2 : 1970 test method is retained as natinal annex NAtohc used only forthedeterminationof the akali cntent ofementforthe purpeofcaleulations tocheck pliancewiththe maximumvalueofremended whenaggregate ontaininganallali reactivenstituent or when an unfamiliar cemnt/agregale bination Is in use (see 4.2.4 ofBS 5328 : Part 1 : 199112).
Ilowever the Eurupean test method is called up in 8.3 of Bs 4027 : 19911whichspecifies themaximum permitted alkali content ofsufate-rsisting Portland cement type Lurw Alknli.
