Jeffrey A. Packer Ph.D. D.Se. PEng is a Professor in the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering at the University ofToronto. He serves as a member of the AISC Task Commitee on Connections (TC 6). He is a recipient of the 2005 AISC Special Achievement Award the 2021 AISC Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2012 ASCE Shortridge Hardesty Award.

Kimberley Olson P.E. is the director of Nucor’s Construction Solutions Group. Prior to joining Nucor she was the HSS Con- sulting Engineer for the Steel Tube Institute. She serves as a member of the AISC Committee on Manuals and its submitteeon bolts welds and connection elements as well as the AISC Task Committee on Connections (TC 6).

Preface

The first edition of this Design Guide by Jeffrey Packer Donald Sherman and Maura Lecce was published by AISC in 2010 and conformed to the 2005 AISC Specijfication for Srructaral Steel Barildingx as well as the 13th (2005) edition of the AISC SteelConstrucrion Manual. This 2nd edition of the Design Guide has been written in accordance with the 2022 AISC Specification and the 16th (2023) edition of the AISC Maual. While the Design Guide is still directed at connections to or between hollowstructural section (HSS) members under predominantly static loading the content has been considerably expanded and updated from nine chapters and 146 pages to ten chapters and 344 pages. The presentation of this Design Guide is particularly focused on connection limit states contains an extensive review of background literature and supports the application of AISC SpecificatinChapters J and K and the AISC Manua/ to HSS connections. A total of 3 design examples are given in both load and resistancefactor design (LRFD) and allowable strength design (ASD) methods.
