As officers of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) we wele this guide the fourth revision of CIBSE Guide E for Fire Safety Engineering.
We believe that this guide provides a thorough and plete introduction to andprimary activity but who have to work with or have dealings with fire engineers or fire engineered buildings either during construction or in use.
The guide also provides a useful concise handbook of fire safety engineering which we know is of proven value to professional fire engineers. It is largely based on existing codesand guidance that professional fire engineers will be familiar with although additional original material has been included where appropriate. The guide necessarily has a strongUK focus but is intended for a global readership.
Many of the chapters in this guide have been written by Fellows and Members of theIFE who are Chartered Engineers. The IFE is mitted to making the world safer fromwith the fire industry have the appropriate petency and ethics.

Preface
This fourth edition of CIBSE Guide E: Fire safey engineering is a fully updated version of the third edition which was published in 2010. The entire text of every chapter hasbeen carefully reviewed.
As with the third edition a concerted effort has been made to provide information thatcan be used internationally. These references include codes standards and guidance from the USA that are frequently used in the Middle East and Asia.
Fire safety engineering can mean many things to many people and covers a wide rangeof levels of knowledge and petence as well as a diverse range of activities of whichdeveloping a package of measures having the objective of reducing the potential for injury death property and financial loss to an acceptable level is the area for which thisGuide is produced.
At the time this guide was going through the final stages of publication the devastatingfire at Grenfell tower in Kensington London occured. CIBSE considered that it should provide guidance on the design of building facades for tall buildings using the expertiseof fire safety consultants and specialist facade engineers within CIBSE. A new chapter on facade fire safety is included in this guide.
Fire safety engineering is a continually developing art and science and users are advisedto maintain a personal regime of professional development and to make use of new standards and techniques that will be introduced after the publication of this Guide.
Finally I wish to extend my thanks to the authors of the various chapters all of whom are experienced fire engineers who were at the time practising with well-respecteddedication and the time and expertise they have freely given this edition of Guide Ewould not have been produced.
